What I've known is that "esoteric" or "gnostic" teachings are part of all religions,not only in Christianity.There is also called Esoteric Buddhism,for example.The founders of all major religions,like Moses,Shiva,Krishna,Buddha,Lao-Tzu,Jesus,Mohammad,Guru Nanak have something called secret teachings that were not available to the masses,but only to their most closest few disciples/followers/companions.
The profoundness of these secret oral teachings were writing in veiled....symbolic forms in all major religious/spiritual texts (The Bible,Koran,Pali Canon,Tao Te Ching,Bhagavad Gita,etc).The real meanings of which could only be understood by an initiate or spiritually realized persons.
Jesus warns His disciples that "Never give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls before pigs. Otherwise, they will trample them with their feet and then turn around and attack you." ~ Matthew 7:6
